This online course provides intensive training for senior staff responsible for managing privacy. It provides users with a detailed knowledge of requirements under the Privacy Act's thirteen Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) and Data Breach Notification Scheme.

Delivered through state-of-the-art e-training software, the course is designed to ensure a high level of user engagement through graphics and interactivity balanced with high quality training content. It contains an e-trainer to guide users through modules, real-life case studies explained through characterised cartoons to demonstrate privacy issues in practice and quizzes to enable users to apply principles in practical scenarios.

The course aims to enable users to perform the role of privacy manager and to develop and maintain a privacy compliance program.

Users receive a hardcopy Participant Handbook containing all course materials and which is suitable for subsequent use as a privacy reference handbook.

The course contains a graded assessment (multiple-choice). Users who successfully pass the assessment can download a Certificate of Completion. User assessment reports are available to training managers. The course is current to 2020.

  • requirements regarding the handling of personal information under the APPs;
  • how to apply the principles in practical situations; and
  • how to identify and manage privacy issues and incidents.

The course is authored by Jeremy Douglas-Stewart, a specialist privacy lawyer at Privacy Law Consulting Australia. Jeremy was a member of the Privacy Commissioner's Consultative Group during her review of the Privacy Act in 2004/05 and of the Australian Law Reform Commission's Privacy Principles Roundtable in 2007. Jeremy has been delivering privacy training workshops since 2007 and is author of the Australian Privacy Law Handbook loose-leaf service.
